Scones are a great treat for the kids. These ones are really tasty especially when smeared with butter and a nice helping of homemade plum jam!

Yield: 9 scones

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup wholemeal spelt flour
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • pinch of sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 60g butter
  • 1 tsp pure maple syrup (optional)
  • 10 chopped dates
  • 1/2 cup natural unsweetened yoghurt

Instructions:

  1. Heat oven to 180c
  2. Mix flour, cinnamon, baking powder and salt together in a bowl
  3. Grate in butter (or cut into small chunks)
  4. Using fingertips, rub butter into dry ingredients until it resembles breadcrumbs
  5. Add dates and mix through with hands
  6. Add maple syrup and yoghurt, using a knife mix until just combined 
  7. Turn out onto bench and shape into a square 2cm thick
  8. Use a sharp knife to cut into 9 pieces
  9. Place on a lined baking tray, place in hot oven for 10-15mins until golden and firm to touch
